Łotrzyce in the Ochota Theatre

Łotrzyce, a play with songs written by Agnieszka Osiecka, has been staged several times so far. Its debut was in 1974 on the STS stage and was directed by Maciej Englert. The latest version was prepared by Piotr Bogusław Jędrzejczak.
The main characters are two women who feel unfulfiled both in their personal and career lives. They make a living chasing after extra work, but dream of acting in a theatre. They do not get along with men, but long for true love. What is more, they continually keep up appearances.
Finally, there comes a time for a breakthrough. Beaten by life, the two women gain some inner strength and will to act. The want to take control of the situation and decide rebel against the agent, to who they had obiedently listened. They inebriate him, tie up, put on make-up and chase him out onto the icy weather...
Hilarious moments intertwine with tragic ones in this play. Łotrzyce provides an intellectual entertainment that boarders on thriller.

Chrysanthemums are usually associated with decorating graves, but the flower's variety allows for almost infinite composition possibilities. These flowers can form the base for a bouquet or serve as an addition to the decoration. The multitude of colours and sizes is another asset of chrysanthemum.

The DOORsz in Taverna 10B

The Doorsz band will perform today in Taverna 10B. The band started playing together in Autumn 2002. In 2005 the duo welcomed a new member, Darek Lewandowski, whose astounding solos on the accoustic guitar strenghtened their music. The trio, at that time known as Miki Band'a, received the audience award at the Szanty Gniazda Piratów Festival in Warsaw.
Unfortunately, after a year and a half, Darek decided to return to his solo career as the classical music player and left the band. This was also the moment when the band changed its name to The Doorsz, which was thought up by Paweł Leszoski (DNA); thus he became the band's godfather.
The band performed as a duo until the beginning of 2007 when Kuba joined up with his double bass. The current size of the band seems just right and is unlikely to change in the near future.
What distinguishes the band is the perfectly low voice of Mikołaj, which, combined with blues harmonica and uncommon for this genre double bass, produces original and interesting sound.
Each member of the band co-operates with other music bands, not necessarily shanty-like ones.
Playing as The Doorsz, they share the love for sailing and all other activities connected with that hobby :-))
They play together because it gives them joy. This apparent "light-heartedness" towards performances on the stage rubs off on the audience as well because it is with the help of their listeners that the band creates the unforgetable atmosphere during the live concerts.

1st Festival of Beach Tchoukball

And WHAT exactly is Tchoukball?

Tchoukball is a team game where you need a ball and two special goals. In contrast to other team games, Tchoukball is a non-contact sport, as intercepting passes, blocking throws or getting in the way of other players is forbidden. There is a 3 metres radius area in front of each goal, which the ball cannot touch. In order to score a point, one must bounce the ball off the goal so that it lands outside the special area. The defending team tries to catch the ball before it hits the ground.

Tchoukball is a very dynamic and spectacular game. The teams can attack on either of the two goals and are allowed to make not more than three passes before throwing at the goal. The player possessing the ball can hold it up to three seconds and make three steps, after which s/he must make a pass or throw the ball.

What distinguishes Tchoukball from other sports is that you do not waste energy on disturbing the opponents because the only way of intercepting the ball is succesful defence. The players focus on developing their own game skills and team play; observing the opponents' moves and positioning oneself on the field is crucial. Because of its rules, Tchoukball is a safe sport, which, according to its founder, encourages the forming of social bonds through physical activity.

You will have an opportunity to see how it looks in practice on Sunday (23.08).
Here is a little preview:

As usual, we present you with the list of films you can watch this week. Club-cafe Mam Ochotę is going to show a documentary, in the Mokotowskie ground park you will be thrilled (and not on the account of the weather), and Hitchock will dominate the repertoire of Iluzjon cinema.

We start off with Mam Ochotę (located in Grójecka 75 street), where we can watch another film with Jewish motifs on Tuesday. The film is shown at 7:30 p.m., but the place opens at noon, so you can drop by and relax over a cup of coffee on a comfortable sofa;-)

Snap shots (63 min.)
During the last 60 years, there were a few truly memorable moments that the Israeli keep in their minds. As a part of the 60th anniversary of proclaiming statehood by Israel, the director Dov Gil-Har recollects seven such moments, meets with heroic figures of those historic moments and tries to reconstruct those events. The earliest relates to the year 1945 and the most recent - 1997...

Later on in the evening, we can watch a thriller with splendid Al Pacino "88 minutes".

And last, but not the least, the films we can watch in Iluzjon this week. And on the screen, many world-famous directors, namely Lynch, Coppola, Hitchcock.

Today in the Fresh Club

Bruk Festival is the only event which presents street art with its various forms of activity in Poland. It is also a great occassion to see the stars of street music, theatre, dance or graffiti performing live and to learn something new from them. This year's festival can be considered a great success. Almost 300 people took part in the workshops that were devoted to dancing, performing as beatboxers or DJs. The workshops were organised in the Music Theatre in Gdynia. The International Theatre Festival was attended by 2.500 people and about 6 thousand participated in the side events!

Today, in the Fresh club, the official Warsaw Afterparty for the Bruk Festival is organised. Many artists and people connected with the festival will appear on the stage, among them we will see: Blady Kris - the most popular Polish beatboxer, Bośniak - a freestyle champion from Trójmiasto, and Bartazz - a specialist in street breakdancing. Incredible DJ Bart and the well-known resident of the Fresh club DJ Technik will play music from behind the console. Some video presentations from Bruk Festival will be shown on the screens to further enhance the amazing atmosphere. During the party, there will be a chance to win some Bruk gadgets, too!

Films in Ochota - New Week

Although this week has not started with much sun, we can still charge our batteries watching good films. This week it is quite mysterious in Mam Ochotę cafe, Oscar-like in Pola Mokotowskie park and back to the '70s in Iluzjon.
Here we go...
in Mam Ochotę we can watch:

Świat Łotmana (57 min.)
Estonia, 2008
Directed by Agne Nelk

There is a world in every human being. Boundless microcosms. They are as big as their owner's imagination. And Juri Łotman's imagination was very big and rich. It contained the whole universe - major part of Russian literature, the galactic-sized semiosphere and broad knowledge of war-time communication means. Being a cosmopolitan, Juri travelled many orbits, collecting various information. And finally, all the gathered and processed ideas had to find a way to surface. Some of them were contained in pictures while others in words.

The film starts at 7 p.m. and, naturally, we spend the money on great coffee and cake instead of on the ticket as it is free:-)

We finish the coffee and take one to go as we head towards Pola Mokotowskie park, where we can watch Good Will Hunting at 9:45 p.m. The film received the Oscar reward for the script in 1997. Here we need not pay for a ticket, either. And the necessary map you can find here.

And all that is left for us is to inform you about the Iluzjon repertoire. Just a reminder, the cinema is located in the National Library building, Niepodległości Avenue 213.

Theatre to Come

29th of July marks the day when the awaited deal was closed and high culture is to arrive to Ochota. The foundation of Krystyna Janda for Culture and MAX-film company signed all the necessary documents to cooperate in reanimating Kino Ochota.
Those who travel along Grójecka street on daily basis can clearly see that the building requires complete renovation. The schedule is tight, though. Krystyna Janda announced on her website that she plans to start performances already in October to coincide the grand opening with the fourth anniversary of Polonia theatre.
We will see such famous theatre blockbusters as Miss HIV, Darkroom, Ucho, gardło, nóż (the last two plays were staged over 150 times!!). There are also some concerts to take place, great artists such as Maria Peszek, Gaba Kulka and Kasia Nosowska will sing their greatest hits...see here.
Quoting Janda: "So, for now, there is the building, which requires renovation, and apart from that there is theoretically nothing. We have the draft of the first theatre season and the general idea how it should be like. We have great hopes and the will to act; there are friends who want to help, directors, actors, and spectators of course."
We are willing to aid this great scheme, too. Ladies and gentelmen, please welcome high culture in our district:)

"Women as Muses" in Monsoon Cafe

We would like to invite you to an exhibition of photographies taken by a young artist Eliza Stegienka and a fashion show of two designers: Katarzyna Bluszcz and Dominika Piekutowska-Swed. The inauguration will take place on 31st July (Friday) at 7 p.m. in Monsoon Cafe (map).
Ela Stegienka has been an amateur photographer for a few years. Women and their beauty is in the centre of her attention. She is not afraid of challenges and is open to new experiences, which is visible in her works. Her photographies can be viewed in Monsoon cafe till the end of August.

During the official opening of the exhibition, the guests can watch a clothes collection prepared by the above-mentioned designers called Zero Gravity Project. The idea of it appeared in 2008 and, as the designers state, its main aim is to fill the gap in the monotonous Polish fashion. They want to create space for people, where they can express themselves artistically, crossing the boundaries set by mass consumption. The clothes were hand-made by introducing alterations to the pieces of clothing coming from the so-called second-hand clothes shops.

"We are inspired by the widely-described mass culture, which we filter through our personal experiences and fascinations. It can be everything, starting from music, literature, hip-hop subculture, straight-edge DIY ideas, through ethnic influences, kitsch of the 80s and 90s, geometry, architecture, to the very place we live in - Warsaw," says Katarzyna Bluszcz.

Katarzyna Bluszcz is a graduate of English Philology at the Warsaw University (UW), but she was always interested in the visual art. Despite that, she has never decided to complete such studies, even though she passed the entry exams at the University of the Arts in London on the graphics faculty. She started the Zero Gravity Project in summer 2008.

Dominika Piekutowska-Swed studied philosophy at UW for a short period of time, but the passion toward art turned out to be stronger. Currently, she is studying clothes design. She plans to take up industrial design in the future.

Let Us Introduce...

Filtry Cafe. This is a place where you can get a lovely froth-made heart with every caffeine (not only) drink.

It is already a cult place for many Ochota inhabitants, which people comment on Warsaw web fora like this: "Stop recommending this place, it is already crowded," :-) This place is a perfect refuge from busy Grójecka street; here, time slows down and kicks back over a cup of nespresso in this open-air cafe. You can watch as the sun lazily sets (Niemcewicza street, where the cafe is located, lies exactly on the East-West axis).
What can you expect on the Filtry Cafe menu? All the combinations based on espresso, i.e. latte, cappuccino, macchiato, or perfect for those hot days - frappe. There is also something to satisfy your hunger - toasts and delicious cakes. If you still feel the atmosphere of Filtry, but you do not fancy more caffeine, you can try freshly-sqeezed juice or "gładzioch", which is the specialty of the house:-) There is a hotspot, too, for those who cannot stay off-line too long and games, such as domino or scrabble, for those who prefer to be off-line as long as possible.
What is more, coffee at Filtry Cafe will not become boring thanks to the variety of new mixtures; the information on them can be found on the cafe's blog. The frothy heart and barista's smile is always included, but that should never get boring. :-)

Filtry Cafe is situated at Niemcewicza 3 (on Lindley's filter station side).
It is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturdays it opens a bit later at 10 a.m., whereas on Sundays it closes at 6 p.m.
You can get there by buses from Raszyńska or Grójecka streets (Narutowicza square), there is so many of them that I will not even list them. :-)
The best idea is to take advantage of the yellow cycle racks just outside the cafe. ;-)
All I can do now is to invite you to the place because not everything can be described by words. Oh, and one more important thing, we do not smoke inside! :-)

Traveller's Map of Warsaw

This map guides to every place a tourist visiting Warsaw should see. And there is plenty to see, including interesting spots in Ochota district. :)
Bęc Zmiana foundation, Warsaw Tourism Agency and the European non-profit organisation USE-IT Europe have just published the updated map - USE-IT Warsaw. It should be available in the Tourist Information points, hostels, galleries and other places often visited by tourists soon. At this point, though, you can download its electronic version from www.use-it-warsaw.pl

Among the described places, one can find two cafes in Ochota, namely Filtry Cafe (www.filtrycafe.blog.pl) and Cafe Kolonia (www.kolonia-ochota.pl). You can read about the former on our blog soon. Moreover, the map provides you with the information on the Pola Mokotowskie park (www.polamokotowskie.pl), National Library (www.bn.org.pl) and Jump Inn hostel (www.jumpinnhostel.com) located near Prokuratorska street.

If you still do not have any plans for the weekend, I recommend printing the map and become a tourist in your own city at least for a day. I am certain that by doing so you will discover a few places that you did not notice while being in an everyday rush.

More Films in Ochota

Let us present the propositions of films which you can watch in the upcoming days in our lovely Ochota district.

Tomorrow (on Tuesdays 28.07), in the club-cafe Mam Ochotę, another presentation of two films with Jewish motifs. The screening starts at 7:30 p.m.

Radegast (60 min.)
Poland, 2008
Directed by Borys Lankosz

In 1941, over 20 thousand Jews from Western Europe were brought to the already overcrowded ghetto. For the first time in the modern world, there was a clash of communities which differed considerably in two centuries of development and the level of emancipation that completely transformed the lives of the Western Jews. The majority of the Polish Jew community treated every act of assimilation as a deviation. On the other hand, the German Jews considered standing apart from the society and upholding the Hasidic misticism a display of ignorance and backwardness.

Dowódca Edelman (58 min.)
Poland, 2008
Directed by Artur Więcek "Baron"

Marek Edelman is a member of the Jewish Bund and, after 1943, he becomes one of the leaders of the uprising in the Warsaw's ghetto; a year later, he also fights in the Warsaw Uprising. He does not leave Poland after the war but he stays as a witness of the holocaust to fight for the human rights. He takes part in the creation of the Solidarity movement in 1980. He is interned during the martial law. Edelman does not stop his activity in the independent Poland; he fights for respecting human rights in the world, having his share in NATO intervention in Kosovo... The film depicts Edelman and his personality, a man who sets boundaries of decency from his armchair whereas the world around him moves faster and faster...

And if you want more film attractions, then finish your coffee and take a walk to Pola Mokotowskie park, where at 9:45 p.m. you can watch the film Resident Evil in an open-air cinema.

Tetka - on the Ochota Tracks

First of all, I have to disappoint those who expect this post is going to be about the car AUDI TT, commonly called Tetka (link) ;) I want to present you with a different Tetka - the tram.

The vehicle, which you can see below, is also called "berlinka". Why? It was manufactured in 1940s in Gdańsk shipyard and was supposed to be used in Warsaw, but eventually it ended up in Berlin... After a few years it returned to Poland to carry passengers from Grodzisk Mazowiecki (present Warsaw's commuting trains - WKD). Not long after that, it was delegated to run on the tramway.

Nowadays, it serves as a tourist attraction. The historic carriage is still in operation and it has become a trademark of summer time in Warsaw as a great idea for a ride at weekends in July and August. Since 1996 ZTM (Warsaw Transport Authority) along with Warsaw Trams company and the Fan Club of Public Transport have been organising rides on the historic trams that operate on a special T route. Tetka trams were different during these 13 years, but the first stop on the route was always Narutowicza square. This year, the T route is as follows:

The route will be modified on the 1.08 and 2.08 for the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising - from Gdański bridge we will go to "Radosława" roundabout, through Okopa and Towarowa streets to Zawiszy square, then along Grójecka street we will get back to Narutowicza square.

As it was mentioned before, the tram runs at weekends - it leaves every 30 min. starting at 11:05. The last carriage departs at 18:05. Choosing the ride with a guide is a brilliant idea as you can learn many fascinating facts about Ochota and Warsaw (I checked it myself, the guide is prepared to answer all the questions so well that nearly an hour-long ride on Tetka seems a fleeting moment:) ). Here are the times of rides with a guide: 12:05, 13:35, 15:05, 16:35, 18:05.

Be sure not to miss a ride on Tetka and enjoy your time.

Regional Food Fair in Blue City

Not everybody knows that a very interesting fair takes place monthly in the shopping centre Blue City (map). During one of the month’s weekend we have a great opportunity to try and buy delicious regional food and drinks, or even hand-made products. The fair is situated in the main hall, with many stalls around the famous fountain.

The choice is difficult because the wonderful aroma of different types of meat and cheese, freshly-baked bread, delicious cakes and healthy fish will surely draw your attention to every stall. The reasonable solution is to give in the temptation and buy some of every product. For those of you who dislike spending their freetime in the kitchen, we recommend the visit the stalls selling marmalades, jams and other preserves. It is also a good idea to equip oneself with a fair amount of honey and liqueurs. We suggest buying delicious Polish bread and confectionery. There are, of course, Polish pierogi, ghurkins, and the traditional lard with crackling. If you already feel famished just by reading this, then visit the website and check when the next fair takes place. Bon appetite.

Films with Jewish Motifs

The club&cafe Mam Ochotę in co-operation with the Jewish Motifs Association invites you to watch the films that were shown during the 6th International Film Festival Jewish Motifs.

The screenings start on Tuesday (7.07) and the first two films to be presented are:

Double Life (30min.)
Poland, 2008
Scriptrwiter and director: Paulina Fiejdasz

Izaak Landesdorfer’s name could be found on the famous Shindler’s list. After the war he changed it into a Polish name in order to hide his true identity. Even though 65 years have passed since the dissolution of the Cracow’s ghetto, the man, who claims he owes his life to Oscar Shindler, still does not want to reveal his true identity so that nobody associates the published memoirs with him.

And the second film:

Volunteers (54 min.)
Israel, 2008
Director: Mooly Landesman

The film poses questions about one’s identity, nationality, and the reasons behind emigrating to a foreign country. In 1960s, kibbutzim – a kind of communes, offered young people from Europe the promised land. Utopian socialism, the sun, alcohol and casual sex. Angelica, the daughter of a former Wermacht officer, becomes discontended.

We will inform you about the next propositions of films presented weekly so check our blog regularly!

Three Times Coffee in Ochota

Do you sometimes wonder where you could enjoy good coffee accompanied by friends, a good book, or a laptop?
The vicinity of Narutowicza’s square offers multiple choice to satiate your needs. Within the peculiar triangle of three streets: Grójecka-Wawelska-Raszyńska one can find up to eight cafes!
Coffee lovers can choose from a café-gallery Stara Ochota, which is furnished in a pre-war style and located at Glogera street, for a modern-looking Filtry cafe near Niemcewicza street, where available Wi-Fi network lets you decide whether to read the morning press on your computer screen or the traditional way. For all those globetrotters who seek new tastes, Filtry café offers “Travels with Espresso”, an opportunity to drink variety of coffee mixtures from different parts of the world. If coffee is not enough to make you feel as travelling, visit café Afryka in Grójecka street, where you can also buy Africa-related art. Another exotic place, at least in name, is café Caracas, which upholds the tradition of the famous café of the same name from the 1960s that was situated at Słupecka 4. Café Bugatti also has a long tradition as well as Azalia cafe, which has been refurbished recently. Both Azalia and coctail-bar Akwarium have delicious ice-cream on the menu. Perfect for this time of year. During those hot summers, one should visit Kolonia cafe, a place granted the quality sign of MaMa foundation. One more cafe, which is more suitable for business people rather than mums, Alexander is located in Sobieski hotel. Apparently, you do not have to go all the way to the centre to drink good coffee in an interesting place.
